Once you have got finished writing a resume; then the several different questions which may get raised in your mind are, (1) Cover Letter means what? (2) what should be the length of the cover letter? (3) what should be the standard contents of the covering letter?
So you will be able to find the answers to those questions are as mentioned below:
It’s a letter to which your resume or CV is enclosed while applying for a job or for an employment.
It’s a letter of 2-3 paragraphs which provides or gives additional information about your skills, knowledge and experience.
Cover letter speaks about why you are the strong match for the relevant job position in the respective organisation or a company.
Typical contents of the cover letter are:
- Your name and contact details: In this section you have to mention your name, contact number and email address.
- The person details to whom you are going address: In this section you have to mention the details of the person to whom you are going to address this letter. The name of the person with salutation to be written(if you the name of respective person). If you don’t know the person’s name then you can mention it as, ” Dear Hiring manager or Dear Concern”. Respective company name, contact number and email address to be mentioned here.
- Job name for which you are going to apply: The name of the job and position to which you are applying for should be mentioned in this section.
- Your introduction: In this section introduce yourself in a genuine way. Don’t use common phrases that are available commonly on internet. Those are given only for references. Nobody knows you better than yourself.
- how did you come to know about this position: Here you can mention that how you got information about the relevant position. (e.g. from Newspaper or from job portals or from career portal of respective organisation etc.)
- Your skills and experience: Mention shortly about your skills and experience. Do not repeat your resume here or paste your resume here.
- Call to action: This section should be written in a strong way because it is the last impression specifying that why recruiter shall contact you for the relevant position.
Cover letter should not be descriptive. It should be written in “to the point” manner.
Do not copy your resume or CV in the cover letter.
